Murphy’s Point Provincial Park, a serene retreat nestled on the shores of the historic Big Rideau Lake, has been a treasured destination for my family and I. Our numerous day trips to this natural haven have been punctuated by leisurely hours spent on its glittering beach, where the sand and water shimmer with mica’s subtle sparkle.

The park is not just a haven for beach and nature enthusiasts but also a portal to the past. The Silver Queen Mine, an early 1900s mica mine, stands as a testament to the region’s mining heritage. Visitors can embark on guided tours from the end of June to Labour Day, delving deep into the earth’s crust, exploring the mine’s cool, dark tunnels, and unearthing stories of yesteryears.

The mine is actually a pretty fun experience – it’s a short hike and tolerable even on a hot day. If you get a chance to go into the mine—you get to see firsthand the remnants of how mica was extracted.

For those who seek to immerse themselves in nature, Murphy’s Point offers a variety of camping experiences. From car and RV camping to group camping, there’s a spot for everyone. The park’s group campsites, which can accommodate from 12 to 50 people, provide a communal outdoor adventure, perfect for making memories with friends and family.

Set against the backdrop of Big Rideau Lake, the park invites water sports enthusiasts to dive into a range of activities. With a boat launch available, visitors can set sail on the lake’s sparkling waters, fish for the catch of the day, or simply bask in the tranquility of the surrounding nature.

I’ve dedicated countless hours to kayaking across the expansive Big Rideau Lake and its interconnected waters, all integral parts of the historic Rideau Canal. Journeying from Ottawa to Kingston along the full stretch of the canal remains a plausable adventure on my bucket list.

This vibrant ecosystem thrives with diverse wildlife, and the park’s commitment to conservation ensures that the area’s beauty and biodiversity are preserved for future generations to marvel at and enjoy.

Trails for Every Trekker

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a casual stroller, the park’s trails cater to all. In the winter, these paths transform into groomed tracks for cross-country skiing, offering a winter wonderland experience. The park’s diverse landscape of forest, wetland, and old fields is a mosaic of habitats for wildlife and a paradise for birdwatchers.

Point Trail (5.5 km, Moderate): Embark on a scenic journey to the peninsula’s tip, with pauses at a sandy beach and panoramic views of Big Rideau Lake.
Sylvan Trail (2.5 km, Moderate): Explore the Frontenac Arch’s geological wonders and ecological diversity, with a guidebook available for a deeper understanding.
Lally Homestead Trail (800 m, Easy): A short drive leads to a tranquil loop through historical farmlands and lush forests, culminating in a picturesque marsh overlook.
Silver Queen Mine Trail (2 km, Easy) & Beaver Pond Trail (1 km, Easy): Discover mining history at the Silver Queen Mine, with heritage displays and a reconstructed bunkhouse, accessible only during tours. The Beaver Pond Trail offers a serene return path along a wetland’s edge.
McParlan House Trail & Loon Lake Loop Trail (1.8 km, Easy): From Hogg Bay Campground, this trail takes you to the historic McParlan House, with bicycle access and connections to the Rideau Trail and Lally Homestead.
